Americans Living Abroad

A Guide for Wealth Managers and Tax Advisors

A guide for the advisors of U.S. citizens and green card holders who live or retire abroad, or who give up U.S. status. The United States taxes its citizens on their worldwide income and estates wherever they live, and the country of residence taxes them as residents. The book treats the two systems together, with the treaties applied as the rule: income tax and the saving clause, estate and inheritance tax, accounts and investments abroad, retirement income, the U.S. estate plan in the new country of residence, and the exit tax.

Readership

The book is written for wealth managers and tax advisors who serve U.S. citizens and green card holders living or retiring abroad, or giving up U.S. status. The chapters on retirement abroad also cover non-citizens who worked in the United States and retire elsewhere.

Foreign law is treated comparatively for five countries: Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy and the United Kingdom. The applicable tax treaty is treated as the rule rather than the exception.

The book stands alone. Its first chapter, on status, situs, the treaties and the reporting forms, is shared by the six books of the Cross-Border Advisor Series and adapted to the readers of each. Where another book of the series treats a rule in full, this book carries a working summary of the rule or refers to that book by short title and section.
